The clamp is a piece of 5//8" plywood with holes on the back edge to match the 1/4" bolts epoxied into the back (vertical) piece. I glued a piece of 1/4"thick felt along the front of the clamp where it meets the sander. I made the back piece about 1/8" more narrow than the width of the sander to insure firm clamping.

Yeah, for shaping 80-100 grit is fine and you won't want to do anything over that for wood. On my belt sander converted to a belt sharpening system, I primarily use nothing more than 180 grit. And that is for sharpening plane blades, lathe cutting tools, etc. I purchased the 200, 400, and 600 grits but never use them.

Cut your 7″ piece of 3/4″ dowel in half. Drill and glue these 1-5/8″ apart into a sandwich of two pieces of 5/8″ plywood (2″x4-3/4″). 1-1/4″ high is almost the perfect height to catch the handle of the sander, this reduces rocking. The 1-5/8″ hole spacing is based on the thickness of the handle.
