An investigation into illegal mining by Karnataka Lokayukta in 2010-11 had revealed an illegal export of iron ore worth more than Rs 12,228 crore between 2006 and 2011 from the state. In a report published in July 2011, the Lokayukta detailed the extent of the racket, naming several BJP ministers, including then CM B S Yediyurappa.

The problem with low-grade iron ore is that it generates a vast amount of waste, known as tailings. In the case of Kudremukh, with an iron ore content of just 30%, the remaining 70% of waste mud had to be dumped somewhere.
