A novel method for organic matter removal from samples …

The samples digested with septic tank cleaner consistently removed a higher percentage of organic matter from the samples, particularly at 0.08 g ml −1. The correlation between organic removal efficiencies and concentrations of septic tank cleaner is presumed to be due to an increase in concentration of enzymes added.

The importance of soil organic matter. Organic matter existing on the soil surface as raw plant residues helps protect the soil from the effect of rainfall, wind and sun. Removal, incorporation or burning of residues exposes the soil to negative climatic impacts, and removal or burning deprives the soil organisms of their primary energy source.
