Sillimanite. Sillimanite is a mineral that belongs to the group of aluminosilicate minerals known as the sillimanite group. It is named after the American chemist Benjamin Silliman Jr., who first described the mineral in 1854. Sillimanite has the chemical formula Al₂SiO₅ and is composed mainly of aluminum, silicon, and oxygen.
