Posted January 21, 2014. I just did my first BP run in my new ball mill, and ran into the problem of the powder caking in the mill. I have a 1 gallon jar with 30# of 1/2 inch lead ball media, which fills the jar half full. The total powder charge is 600gm, about 1 qt in volume. The KNO3, S, & willow coal were all airfloat milled before mixing.

Blast, the three pound ubiquitous ball mill in your link requires HUNDREDS of 1/2" balls to be effective. Ball mill media is one of the big headaches of this hobby. You either pay through the nose, labor long and hard cutting your own, or both. I'd skip the lead balls personally. I think a better media is a brass bar, cut into segments.
