In 2005, hard coal consumption reached a total of 4.9 billion tons (Gt, equals 4.2 billion tce) or 27% of world energy consumption. Hard coal's share in world energy consumption has hardly changed since 1980. In absolute figures, however, it rose by 75% (1980: 2.8 Gt or 2.2 Gtce), and by 34% since 2000 alone.
